Salobreña is built on a dramatic rock. A labyrinth of streets with white houses make up the intriguing districts of Brocal, Albaycín, La Fuente and La Loma. A map is unnecessary - just follow you instincts. If you are going up you will certainly end up at the castle, if you are going down then you can only end up in the shopping district.
The Arabic fortified castle sits right on top of the rock, 110 metres above sea level. Each year Salobreña castle attracts many thousands of visitors, and the best views are available from this vantage point. You will be told that at the beginning of the 15th century, the Sultan of Granada was close to death and was deeply concerned that his son might be robbed of his inheritance by the Sultan’s younger brother Yusuf. Yusuf at this time was already in prison in Salobreña. The Sultan sent an agent to kill his brother. Yusuf was found to be in the middle of a chess game when the agent arrived and asked to be granted a last wish. He wished to be allowed to finish the game of chess.
This agreed he prolonged the chess game until news arrived of the death of the Sultan. At this point the Sultan's brother was affirmed in place of his nephew.
The parish church lies below the castle built on the site of an old mosque and is noteworthy for it's Moorish style arch.
Another important feature of Salobreña is its long beach, divided into two parts by the Peñon or "Rat" rock (because of the shape). The beach of Salobreña is just a short walk away from the old village. Along the beach there are a number of restaurants and bars plus a few “chiringuitos” (beach bars). The chiringuitos are well liked by both locals and visitors.
The Town Museum, found inside the municipal library offers lots of information about the physical history of Salobreña and is well worth a visit. With the help of a model and other aids, the visitor will learn how Salobreña was once almost an island before the river deposited its sediment forming the Guadalfeo delta. Together with the near tropical climate this explains the profusion of crops such as sugar cane that gas helped the town to prosper.
Salobreña has its share of traditional festivals and fairs just as any other town or village in Spain. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is worth experiencing just to witness how the villagers manage to carry the “tronos”, up and down the awkwardly narrow sloping streets. From the 24th to the 29th of June we celebrate our San Juan and San Pedro fair which is followed in October by the festival celebrating the Virgin of the Rosario, the patron of Salobreña.
Throughout the summer holiday season there are many concerts and shows in Salobreña, many taking place by night in the breathtaking setting of the Arabic castle. An event not to be missed is the “Lucero del Alba” flamenco festival. At this time the historic castle becomes a romantic setting for a splendid manifestation of traditional music and dancing. For a great night out "Venta Luciano" just 15 minutes drive from Apartment Salobrena has a barbecue and flamenco show every Friday night.
Salobreña holidays offer so many interesting things to do and places to visit. We are for example only an hour and ten minutes from the ski resort of Sierra Nevada, - Granada city is just over thirty minutes drive and the world famous Alpujarra region is Only ten minutes from Apartment Salobreña. There are lots of sporting activities close by including of course, every water sport you can bring to mind.

Salobrena - Pronounced "Salobrenya" is a large village rather than a town and is in two parts. The first part is the old town spreading down the hillside from the splendid castle to the shopping areas below. The castle is open daily to the public and well worth a visit. The views in every direction from "Salobreña Castle" are spectacular.
The old village is a typical "Andalucian White Village" with lots of interesting twists and turns to investigate.
At the lower level there is a Municipal Market selling fruit/veg and fish. The market opens each morning. Next to the Municipal Market a small general market on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Shopping hours are 10am to 1.30 pm. and from 5.30pm to 8pm. Monday to Saturday.
"Super Sol" the supermarket is open from 9.30am til 9pm. Monday to Saturday. There are two Super Sol's, one in the old village close to Plaza Goya, the other is on the left on the road from the old village heading towards the beach.
English & German language newspapers are available in Salobreña, from the newspaper shop which is located behind the Bodega Restaurant.
Good banking services are available, In particular the "CAIXA" bank has good English speaking staff, ask for Alberto or Enrique.
Banks are open from 8.30am to 2pm daily from Monday to Friday. There are slightly extended hours in the summer months.

Taxis operate from the stand next to the buses and prices are controlled. Malaga Airport for example 105 Euros one way.
Car hire is recommended when visiting as the area is quite hilly but primarilly because there are so many interesting places to visit that can realistically, only be reached by car. We find that AurigaCrown, although one of the biggest rental companies still offer the best deals. They have an office in the airports and also locally in Almunecar.
The second part of Salobrena is the beach area where there are many restaurants and all of the water sports. Head straight through the village and continue South to find the beach.
Motril Motril is substantial town and an important shipping port, very Spanish, not much tourism from other countries. There is a good "pedestrianised" town center and some excellent shops. The town is again divided into two very separate parts. The town proper is North of the N340 and the Beaches, golf course, yacht club and Port Area are to the South.
Motril has a Magnificent Church located in the town center.
English language church services are held on Sundays (not at the main church).
Shopping hours in Motril are 10am to 1.30pm and 6pm to 8.30pm Monday to Friday, closed half day Saturday and all day Sunday.
A good, large supermarket "Al Campo" opens Monday to Saturday 10am to 10pm. There are numerous other supermarkets dotted around Motril including Dani, Mercadonna and Supersol.
Motril Golf (18 holes) is not a private club and welcomes all comers. it has a good restaurant, is right on the beach and well worth a visit. Bars and restaurant are open from 1.30pm. Clubs can be hired, full or half sets at reasonable rates. The green fees are also very reasonable. English is spoken at reception. Click here
The Port of Motril is a good visit, the fishing boats unload their catch every morning from early until mid morning except Sundays. There are some interesting fish restaurants in the area of the port.
The Yacht Club is not open to the public, however, visiting yachtsmen who can show a club card from elsewhere are made very welcome. The club has a nice bar and restaurant and a private swimming pool open during the summer months. The pool is strictly for the use of members only.
Almunecar pronounced Almoonyecar until recently a small Andalucian town, has now been discovered. It is now a bustling family tourist resort catering for every taste.
The old town which has been "pedestrianised" is intriguing and a place to comfortably while away 3 or 4 hours just exploring. There are some excellent restaurants of all types in Almunecar including Chinese, Indian, British, German, but of course mainly Spanish. There is also considerable night life.
Almunecar market is every Friday morning it is huge and a must for the keen market goer.
In addition the Municipal Market is open every day except Sunday for fruit/veg, fish and meat, again this is an excellent market. There is a large underground car park below the municipal market.
There is a big flea market known as a "Rastro" on the first Saturday of every month. Almuñecar 7 minutes by car from "Apartment Salobreña".
The Splash Park on the sea front is fun for all ages and is open throughout the summer months.
Almunecar fiestas are not to be missed, wonderful parades and costumes, especially at Easter.
Granada and Sierra Nevada
Granada is the most important city in the area and a great tourist attraction the Alhambra being one of the worlds most visited places. In the summer months and at some other times also, it is necessary to book tickets in advance. Visiting times are assigned with the ticket.
Tickets are obtained on line or at the entrance. We don’t however advise waiting until you arrive to buy tickets, especially in the summer months – buy well in advance - visits are timed.
The best way into Granada is to take the first slip road after the Sierra Nevada turning. At the bottom of the slip road at the traffic roundabout turn right. Then follow the road signs for “Centro” into the town center.
A tip to see Granada with ease. The shops open at 10am. and close at 2pm. open again at 6pm and close at 8.30. Monday to Saturday. Plan to arrive in the morning shortly after the shops have opened thus missing the rush hour.
Park in the center where there are a number of underground car parks all clearly marked. A good one is under the town center branch of the department store "El Corte Inglais". Spend the morning seeing the town center and then take a break until 3pm. By three o'clock the town will be quite empty for siesta. At this time it is easy to drive around the whole of Granada and park on the street in most places. In this way it is possible to see a great deal without pain. "El Corte Inglais" is open all day and does not take siesta.
For the Sierra Nevada's take the exit as marked, just before you reach Granada. The road right to Sierra Nevada Village is clearly marked. The resort is open all year round and the ski lift occasionally operates in the summer. The Ski Season begins with the first snow usually around November and lasts until sometime in April. There is snow on the top however, most of the year. There are lots of reasonably priced places to eat in the village as well as on the roadside. Skis and snow boards can be hired from one of the many shops in the village.
The Alpujarra The closest entry point to the Alpujarra from Apartment Salobrena is on the Granada Road.
Take the road in the direction of Granada for about 5 minutes and until you see the bridge over the river on your right. Cross the bridge and turn left, you are now in the Alpujarras on the road to "Orgiva". Alternatively, continue on the Granada road for another 10 minutes and take the right hand turning to "Lanjarron".
If you have the time, try to make it to "Trevelez" a beautiful village and a wonderful drive.
